Presentation copy, inscribed by Tolkien on the flyleaf, "Mr. & Mrs. Livesley & Edgar with best wishes from J.R.R. Tolkien." The recipients, the Livesleys and their son Edgar, ran the Kennaway House, a Regency town house in the village of Sidmouth, East Devon which Tolkien used as a summer holiday home and the surrounds of which inspired the landscapes, flora, and fauna of The Shire", the region of Middle-earth inhabited hobbits first introduced in The Hobbit. Situated on the rocky coast of the rustic Devon countryside, the village of Sidmouth has featured in a number of famed literary works, as "Stymouth" in Beatrix Potter's children's story The Tale of Little Pig Robinson (1930), "Idmouth" in Thomas Hardy's Wessex, "Baymouth" in William Makepeace Thackeray's Pendennis, and "Spudmouth" in The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. English poet Elizabeth Barrett lived in the town from 1832 until 1835. In the final stages of The Hobbit's revisions, Tolkien notably penned a list of special recipients he wished to present copies of the first printing of the book to upon publication, including C.S. Lewis, R.W. Chambers, R.W. Chambers, Simone dâ Ardenne, George S. Gordon, Elaine Griffiths, his aunts Mabel Mitton and Florence Hadley, and the Livesleys who hosted him at the Kennaway House. The first printing of The Hobbit was issued on 21st September 1937 with a print run of only 1500 copies. The book was an immediate success and sold out within months. The First Printing was the only printing in which all the artistic illustration plates are in black and white. The second impression was printed in December the same year in an edition of 2300 copies (423 of which were destroyed at the warehouse of the binder, Key and Whiting, in the bombing of London on November 7th 1940) and was the first printing to convert four of the author?s black and white illustration plates to color. These were initially commissioned for and later published in the American edition. [Hammond A3a.] Please note ? Currently only two first printings (in the original dust jacket) are listed today, both listed for upwards and $200,000.00 and up; and currently there is not a second printing in the original dust jacket listed. A lovely near fine clean book. The boards are without the common fraying or brittleness. Instead the cloth is all present, and in supple condition, overall clean with some very slight age toning to the cloth. The book has sharp corners, one lightly pushed, and a square tight binding. The original decorative map end papers are present and clean and bright. The book is in beautiful clean condition with no bookplates, no owner names, no handling marks, no stains, no bent pages, one small original bookstore sticker to lower front end paper. Lightly foxed to the outer page block. A remarkably clean book in excellent collectible condition. Please see all the images. The exceedingly scarce original dust jacket is present and NOT price clipped (of the few remaining second printing jackets most tend to be price clipped). The jacket has benefited from some restoration by an expert paper conservator to several intact tears (one larger, one smaller), and a small 3/4 inch triangular chip to the upper white area of front panel (located in between the two birds). The jacket presents beautifully with strong vibrant colors and with but some slight toning to the white area of the front panel and with slight sunning to the spine (as common with this title). The book has been conserved, and Tolkien s famous original jacket has in addition been expertly restored to near-pristine condition. The 4th impression was the last printing of Tolkien s original story, before his revisions to the book in the early 1950s to more closely comport with the story of The Lord of the Rings, then in progress.

All illustrations are present as called for, and are firmly attached. The frontispiece and all illustrations are in black & white. "Thror's Map" and "Map of Winderland" are in color on the end papers. Exceedingly rare with only 1,500 copies printed. Additional photos can be provided upon request. Condition: Light soiling to covers and spine. Strip of cloth missing at center-left edge of spine. The center-right strip and the remainder of the spine below it are loose and attached at the right edge only. Small cloth tears at outer front cover corners; tiny cloth tear at bottom-left corner of back cover. Small cloth tear/piece missing at the top-left corner of the spine. No cracks and no loose pages. The front cover is a bit shaky. Pages 269/270 and 271/272 have been removed. A name "Jilland Jeremy" written in pencil at the bottom of page 207. Pages 207-210 and the illustration after page 146 have light staining along the top and outer edges. Page 47 has a small stain and 1/2" tear at the outer edge. The pages are generally clean with an occasional smudge, stain and foxing spot here and there (most notably to some random pages between 1 and 20). There is a very light "waviness" to the pages. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1942) The Hobbit or There and Back Again , UK first book club edition using the first edition, third impression sheets, published by The Children s Book Club by arrangement with George Allen & Unwin. Condition: a near fine copy. There are no previous owners inscriptions, names, no bookplates, no stamps. The original chrome yellow boards are in nice shape with a little shelf wear and light tonong to the spine. The lettering on the spine is nicely visible with just a touch of rubbing as shown. Internally clean with no illustrations coloured in as often found. The page block with a whiff of faint foxing spots as shown, otherwise unmarked. The war economy standard paper used for this edition is preserved remarkably well. The original dust jacket is not present. Publication history: In late 1942 George Allen & Unwin printed 1,500 copies of a third impression and 3,000 copies for the children s book club to be sold by Foyles. The sheets were supplied to Foyles unbound and they were bound in cheaper boards without the dragon design familar with the regular trade edition. Also, no maps as endpapers were used. As opposed to Tolkien s own beautiful dust jacket, an orange-red wrapper showing a fat, dandified Bilbo. Tolkien loathed the design so much that it was not repeated again and this book club edition has remained an anomaly in the early publication history of the much loved childrens book. Since the boards used are much thinner and the paper the economy standard it is difficult to find copies that have survived the passage of time in decent condition if at all since book club editions tend to be unloved or discarded. With the bowing hobbit on the title page; chapter VII mis-identified as chapter VI on page 118; and pastedown maps are reverse of order shown on the "List of Illustrations" page. The four color and nine B&W illustrations are present. Good, in a new facsimile dustjacket. Typical flaws as seen in such a well-loved, well-read book (photos attached). There is wear at the spine extremities, and at the corner tips; and some wear along the front outer hinge. The spine is sun-darkened, but the lettering appears unaffected. There is rubbed surface soil to the boards; with a few small stains, and two thin ~3/8" pen marks on the rear board. The front hinge is split between the first blank and the frontis; shaken. The rear hinge is cracked. The page edges are typically age-darkened, and the endpapers are slightly so. There is a tasteful bookplate on the first blank (with a previous owners name and 1938 date). There is a small, light stain at the fore-edge of the reverse of the frontis (not visible in the frontis illustration). There is a fairly light stain along the fore-edge of the rear flyleaf (visible only on the blank side; not on the map face). The facsimile DJ is new. The internal pages are very clean with No handling marks, No stains, No creased or bent pages. Barest hint of light faded foxing to the first few pages, otherwise No foxing. All pages present, including all the color plates and the black and white illustrations. This copy has the sitting elf playing the flute on the title page which makes this book a True edition, First printing in the second state. A clean example and delightful to read. Please see images. With war economy standard paper. George Allen & Unwin printed 1,500 copies of a third impression and 3,000 copies to be sold by Foyles. The sheets supplied to Foyles were unbound and so the edition was published with cheap, simple boards with no map end papers. Plus a large Bilbo as the illustration on the dust jacket. Tolkien disliked the publication so much that no further book club editions were published. With thinner boards and economy paper there are few numbers of this publication to be found in a decent condition. Original worn yellow cloth boards with faded gilt lettering on the spine. Binding is different though- appears to be unique library binding, gold-tan with dark blue lettering and a brown Hobbit/elf on front board. Library labeling etched into cloth on spine, otherwise minimal labeling. Lacking the illustrated endpapers. All color plates present, clean and vibrant. Minor dust wear to boards, general shelf/reading wear. Spine somewhat faded. Pages/boards clean, binding sturdy. Feel free to ask for photos!.

Coloured frontis., 7 b/w plates plus illustrated half-page tailpiece. Decorated green boards, remarkably clean and fresh, edges very lightly sunned with slight shelfwear. Pages toned with occasional spots of foxing, signs of light creasing/impression to pages 59-67. Wrapper has been stored with flaps to the outside of the boards so pattern from boards has lightly offset onto flaps.Price of 9s 6d net to front flap which has a light vertical crease. Wrapper is slightly sunned and has some surface soiling. There are nicks to corners and head and tail of spine with small close tear to where tail of spine meets front panel. A remarkably clean and sound copy.

Hompen, eller En resa dit och tillbaksigen ("The Hobbit, or A journey there and back again"), translated to Swedish by Tore Zetterholm,illustrated by Torbjörn Zetterholm (interior illustrations) and Charles Sjöblom (cover and maps). Extremely scarce first translation of The Hobbit, also the only translation of the Hobbit from the first UK edition before the changes Tolkien made to the text after writing the Lord of the Rings, and the first translation of any of the author's books. Tolkien took great umbrage at Förbundets failure to use the book's correct title and their changing of the original text. As a result, this edition was suppressed and replaced by an approved translation entitled 'Bilbo' (Hallqvist, 1962). Publisher's cloth-backed illustrated boards, endpaper maps. Except for a scrape on the back due to a removed price sticker, the book is in an excellent condition. The fragile boards have exceptionally little wear and binding and spine are also in a superb condition. Clean pages without names, inscriptions or dog ears. This wont worsen though and is now completely dry. Some small scuffs in places. A small white place on back were the red is. Some small stains inside and two dog-eared pages. Very scarce overall and even more so in this superb condition.

Original box with a small scuff to the top right edge, with a very minor bump to same area, inside of box darkened to the corners. No tissue paper wrapper. Book has bright gilt decorations, blue speckled page edges, square binding, clean bright pages, no inscriptions. Many beautiful illustrations by J.R.R. Tolkien. Very good or near fine condition.

First Portuguese edition; 8vo; full-page illustrations by António Quadros, age-toning to text block, some minor marks and stains, remains of small label to front free endpaper, 1979 newspaper cutting about John Travolta loosely inserted between pp322-323 causing additional browning; publisher's illustrated boards, somewhat marked, rubbed and bumped, map endpapers. The first and only edition in this format, possibly due to Tolkien's dislike of the translation of the word Hobbit. Delightfully illustrated and decidedly uncommon thus.
